Dec. 1-15, 2006

There isn't much happening here at Desert Vista.  There are lots of units, but all is quite quiet.

It takes a long time to warm up in the morning.  The sunrise is beautiful in this clear desert air.

I am walking several mornings and evenings a week.  My legs feel much better when I walk.  Gets the blood circulating.

We have to finish our Christmas shopping.  Jody and Rachael will be here soon.  We are looking forward to them being with us for Christmas.

Dec. 2nd - We are driving to Prescott today to try and find some place to do Christmas shopping.  Everyplace you go in Arizona is a long drive.  It is a lot like Saskatchewan.  A 50 mile drive is normal to get to a store.

We are taking the scenic route.  We are going US-60, SR-71 and SR-89.  I think every route is scenic here.

SR89Prescott.jpg (50074 bytes)Our route took us across the valley, then up into the hills.  The road has length restrictions and I can understand why.  The corners are extremely sharp.  At times we came around close to 360 degrees, while going up or down.  It was an interesting and scenic route.

We could see a farm of some sort way down in the valley.  We had to see if we could get a closer look.  100_0830 (Small).jpg (39093 bytes)100_0831 (Small).jpg (45841 bytes)

It is a dairy farm.  I have never seen one like this before.  Our dairy cattle in Ontario wouldn't know what to think of a farm like this.  They would be in shock.  They spend their days in large green pasture fields.  There are numerous dairy farms like this around.

We drove through a narrow section of Prescott National Forest.  There were huge Ponderosa Pine trees, beautiful.  Soon we were in Prescott and were able to find a Wal*Mart.  There were numerous other large box stores.  We were able to complete our Christmas gift list here.  We only have a few other items to buy for stocking stuffers.

Lots of history in Prescott.  100_0806 (Small).jpg (39707 bytes) Has wide streets also. The trip back has some interesting rock formations and the road signs tells their own stories.

return_from_Prescott.JPG (15193 bytes)We twisted down and around in reverse of our trip up this morning.  It has been an interesting day.  I can quit worrying about getting my Christmas shopping done now.

There is lots of interesting sites in this area.  There are petroglyphs just west of here.  There is lots of unique scenery away from city lights, plants that we have never had a chance to get a close look at, plus many other sites to see.

Doug found some antique cars that I am sure he will want on his pages.  You can have a look at what he found here.

We drove into Wickenburg for groceries and to Quartzsite to book our next reservation.  We will be at Kofa Mountain, just north of the four corners in Quartzsite from Dec. 12th to Dec. 18th.  I don't know about Doug but the first experience of Quartzsite was long awaited by me.  There weren't many vendors yet, but where they will be is quite apparent.  We will just have to wait for the full experience.

100_0854 (Small).jpg (61187 bytes)One thing I enjoy is taking photos of old, authentic buildings.  This one is in-between Salome and Desert Vista on SR-60.  If only the walls could talk.

I have read about Sweet Darlene's for years.  We had our lunch here and also took home some of the pecan rolls.  I wander if they are as good as the ones I make?  I have made them commercially for The Wheels in Chatham.  If anyone has ever had The Wheels Sunday brunch, you will know what I mean.  If not, and you are in Chatham, The Wheels Sunday Brunch is the best.  A lot of dedicated people work hard all week to make sure it is.  I tried the rolls and they are good, but I still think the Wheels recipe is better.  They are the best I have ever tasted.

A drive up to Lake Havasu seemed like a good thing to do.  We wanted to see London Bridge.  We don't think that we will ever get to London, England and it will be a treat to experience walking in Doug's Fathers footsteps by walking across London Bridge.  Percy was a British Home Child and was sent to Ontario, Canada from London, England in 1922.  Here is Doug standing on London Bridge. 100_0924 (Small).jpg (52030 bytes) Quite a story about how the bridge came here and how the fellow paid for the bridge, and re-construction.  Very interesting.  Quite an enterprises fellow.  When the bridge was in London and covering the Thames River, it never looked out over such beautiful scenery as this.

We will be coming back here with Jody and Rachael we will do more tourist stuff then.  We drove on up SR-95 until we reached I-40.  Jody has been wandering which will be the quickest way for them to find us, in this section of the country.  I will let them know that it is a good road with lots of scenery.

We have lots of sites to check out in Quartzsite.  We have the next week to see it all.

We went and checked out the Main Event.  There are a few vendors and more arriving daily.  I want to see Hi Jolly and all the other classic Quartzsite experiences.
