Dec. 16 - 31, 2005

Christmas is just around the corner and our son Jody and daughter-in-law Rachael is coming to spend it with us.  Yahoo!

They left Tilbury, Ontario today - Dec. 16th.  I hope that the roads are clear for them and that they have a safe fun trip here.  It is a long way to come for a one week holiday, but we are glad that they are coming.  We are still at Kofa Mountain in Quartzsite.  100_0948 (Small).jpg (60236 bytes)Our site is small, but we have a nice garden beside us and a grapefruit tree at the back of the coach.

I am really surprised, the grapefruit are very delicious.  Sweet and juicy.  Who would have thought grapefruit and oranges would grow in such a dry area as Arizona.  They are some of the best I have ever tasted.  I have never found a California orange or grapefruit that I like, and I have decided that I haven't found an Arizona orange or grapefruit that I don't like.  Yummy!

We have a couple more days here before we move on to Colorado River, Ehrenberg, AZ.  We will get there just before Jody and Rachael does.  It will be good to see them.  We haven't seen any family since we left Ontario in October.

Saturday is here and that means moving day.  We don't have far to move.  Just west-over the hill and across the valley.  We were packed up, and at our new location in less then two hours.  We are settled in for Christmas.  Now we can start decorating for the season.

100_0958 (Small).jpg (41245 bytes)Isn't our home pretty with all the Christmas decorations?  Lots of coaches have their exteriors decorated with Christmas lights.  They are all beautiful in there season decorations.

100_0955.jpg (233956 bytes)Have you ever seen a sunset like this?  The colors  are just beautiful.  I don't know what it is, but Wow!

Jody and Rachael will be here soon.  We can hardly wait.  They will be tired, but I hope that they think the long trip is worth it.

Another beautiful Arizona sunset.

Jody and Rachael arrived.  Now I know that it is the Christmas season.

They have drove thousands of miles to get here.  We will give them a day of rest before we start sightseeing.  We want to take them to Lake Havasu so that Jody can walk London Bridge.  There are many other things to look at in-between.  We will also go on up to Oatman, AZ.

We drove on up to Oatman and stopped at Parker Dam and Lake Havasu on the way there.  100_0776 (Small).jpg (76105 bytes)

100_0780 (Small).jpg (38424 bytes)Family photo-Doug, Jody and I.  We all have to work on our smiles.  We really were enjoying our day 8).

We didn't stay long because there is a lot of sightseeing to pack into today.  Our next stop was Lake Havasu.  We told Jody about this being the bridge that his Grandpa would have used when he was a small boy in London, England.  100_0990 (Small).jpg (58195 bytes)

We didn't stay in Lake Havasu long.  We were on our way to Oatman.  We had to see a wild burro.  Doug has been wanting to see one for years.  We have seen lots of donkeys, mules and burros before, but it is the wild one we want to meet.

We topped a hill and around the corner, about 15 miles south of Oatman, AZ and there he was.  Doug instantly named him Blackie. 100_0788 (Small).jpg (59136 bytes)He was a true wild burro, out in the middle of no place.  We are sure that he was taking full advantage of us, but we loved it.  He strolled across the road and proceeded to eat every carrot and apple we had brought with us.  He let us pet him and was willing to stay as long as we had something to feed him.  He was in good shape, so I am sure he was able to mooch lots of stuff to eat from passing tourist.  Blackie made the trip worthwhile, 100_0789 (Small).jpg (69546 bytes)so I am glad that he decided to mooch from us.  You can see evidence of his prior visits to the same spot on the ground

After meeting Blackie the burros of Oatman seemed tame.  We had to buy more carrots to treat them.  100_0799 (Small).jpg (74423 bytes)

We stopped for lunch at one of the local saloons.  It was so smokie inside we decided to sit outside so that we could all breath. The view reflected in the window of the saloon was awesome.  We had a snack and enjoyed all of the activity around us.100_1031 (Small).jpg (76196 bytes)   There were numerous people, some on bus trips from Los Vegas.  Here is one photo showing all of the activity from the north end of main street Oatman, AZ 100_0796 (Small).jpg (64146 bytes) and the girls (burros) are called for their treat of the afternoon and go here for their change of diet -  oats 100_1046 (Small).jpg (66140 bytes)We heard a womans voice calling the girls for their oat treat.  They weren't long heading home to get the oats.  This next photo tells the story of the burros.  They keep this little town going.  They bring in the gold.  100_1039 (Small).jpg (72649 bytes)

We had checked out all the little stores, the burros ate all the carrots we had bought for them, Doug had tried out the spare coffin 100_1041 (Small).jpg (68727 bytes)He said that it needed to be a bit taller as he had to bend his knees to fit in 8).  Lots to see and lots of fun in Oatman, AZ.  It is fun being a tourist, but we have a bit of a drive to get back to Colorado River and the campground.  We drove home on the California side, back down US-95.  Tomorrow we start our preparation for Christmas dinner.

We went into Blyth, CA to buy the turkey.  All of the small turkeys are gone!  I am going to have to try and stuff a 20 lb. turkey into our little oven.  We will have a twice stuffed turkey.  Once with the stuffing and the second with stuffing the turkey into a RV oven.  This will be interesting.  It is so large that I couldn't put it in the fridge.  Thank goodness for coolers and ice.  We will get it cooked one way or another.

Christmas Day 2005 is a day to think about the true meaning of Christmas.  It is not the gift giving or decorations.  It is a very special birthday.  One of a kind.  We are lucky to have Jody and Rachael here to celebrate Christmas Day with us.  We called all of the relatives and wished them all a merry day.

Rachael tried her best to get a sun burn to go back to Tilbury, Ontario with to show her family and friends that she had been in tropical weather for Christmas.  It isn't easy here in Arizona, because the hot part of the day is so short.  She did brave the outdoor swimming pool also.  She wanted to go swimming in Arizona.  She is one brave person.  For me to go swimming in an outside pool it has to be a lot warmer.

100_1055 (Small).jpg (44403 bytes)We took a drive up to Parker, by way of Bouse.  Rachael wanted her picture taken by a cactus and we wanted to try the buffet at the Parker casino.  This is the chosen one.  This one has been standing here for a very long time.  It is hard to find one this large, and not full of holes from the birds making their homes in the cactus.  We checked out many cactus before finding the perfect one.

I had my picture take by it also, but I will spare you that experience 8).

We had taken this route to Parker looking for the Fisherman.  We didn't find him today either.  We will have to keep looking.  I love all of these historical sites.  The Arizona climate preserves all of these artifacts so well.  I don't think that we will get to see all of the sites that we want to see this time.

Rachael wanted to check out the sales after Christmas before starting home.  We stopped at the first Wal*Mart we saw.  She was happy.  Time is passing quickly.  Soon, we will be two again.

Jody and Rachael started the long drive home today.  They are taking the scenic route.  Grand Canyon is their first stop.  This will be their second attempt to see it.  I hope that they do.  The first attempt was a few years ago when they were on a Las Vegas holiday.  They rented a Mustang convertible and were having so much fun driving it, they never did get to the Grand Canyon.  We will see it in January when we are in the Casa Grande area on our way home.

We relaxed the last few days of this year.  We have packed a lot of sight seeing and shopping into the few days Jo and Rachael were here so we have to re-charge our batteries for our next sight seeing adventures.

We are here until Jan. 1st and then we move back to Quartzsite for a few more days. The Colorado Campground is right on the shores of the Colorado River.
