Nov. 15 - Nov. 30, 2007

Nov. 15th  is moving day.  We are leaving Benchmark RV in Meridan,  and starting south to Abita Springs, LA.  We have had some beautiful warms days, while we have been here, but it is time to move.

We were packed up early  and on the road.  We had a pull-thru site so we were able to hook the car up yesterday and all we had to do this morning after breakfast was lower the TV satellite dish and unplug the electricity.

We hadn't put the awnings up but did have the car hooked up at this point.  You can see the car behind the coach.  This is a Passport America park.  The sites are narrow, but it worked for us for the couple of days we were going to be in this area.  Everyone is very friendly here.

We had a good day for travel.  Somehow I crossed up on my directions and ended up adding quite a few miles to our days drive.  I won't make that mistake again.  We drove about an hour further west then we should have and by the time I realized it, we were in Baton Rouge.  Grrrrrr!!  That really extended our day.  We finally arrived though and were given a real nice site backing onto one of the ponds.

This is our back yard for the next two weeks.  Lots of fish and even turtles in the pond.  There are ducks and Canada Geese also making good use of this beautiful spot.  We are going to have lots of wildlife to keep us amused.  We have already seen several different varieties of birds also.  Our neighbors has birdfeeders hanging in various trees.  They are work campers so the feeders having been in the same spot for awhile and the birds are accustomed to coming to the feeders.  There is also a squirrel that has learned how to get to the seeds in a feeder that was meant to discourage him.  It just made him more inventive.  He has found a way.  I was never able to get a picture of him doing his gymnastics though.

The first few days after we arrived, we just hung out and enjoyed the park.  There is a couple of places we wanted to see while in the area.  Doug wanted to go and see Magnaville and I would like to see Magnaville* also along with some of the Plantation Houses along the River Road

We decided to see Magnaville first.

We started out early enough from Abita Springs, but ended up loosing time due to I-10 being closed west of Baton Rouge because of a gas line fire. which closed 55 miles of I-10.  We were routed onto 190 along with thousands of other vehicles of all types.  We finally reached our cutoff and headed north on 105.  It was an interesting drive seeing a different side of Louisiana, which you don't see by staying on the interstates.

We found the entrance of Magnaville just south of Simmesport.

The whole area was neat and tidy.  Very well cared for.  We didn't see anyone out around because there was a bit of rain in the air.  We didn't think that they would appreciate us driving around through there neighborhood, so we settled for having a look from the road.  It is a very nice looking neighborhood and a credit to any area.

If I had a choice of where to live between Simmesport and Magnaville, I would choice Magnaville.  It is so much cleaner and neater and more friendly looking then the rest of the surrounding area.  That is just my opinion from my first visit to the area.

The day was very great with a light rain falling so my photos didn't turn out all that great, but I am posting them anyway so that you can see what I sawl

This is their closest neighbor

We took a different route home (back to the coach at Abita Springs) and enjoyed seeing more of the rural Louisiana countryside.  It was a very interesting day.

We took a couple of days to plan our next adventure and then

Here is a link to the Evergreen Plantation photo along with a map showing where it is at.  You can look at it on Google Earth by following the links here  If you are in the area it is well worth the time to basically step back in time, when viewing these beautiful Plantation homes.  In some areas there are still a few slave cabins also.  It is definitely a window into a different time and place.  Well worth the drive.

We left Abita Springs on Nov. 29th and are now at Turtle Bay in Wallisville, TX.  We leave here Monday morning.  We are not looking forward to our drive through Houston, but we will get through it the same as we do all the other cities.

We did take a drive down to Galviston yesterday.

You can see by the map that we crossed open water on US-87 to Galveston Island.  There is a free ferry provided by The Texas Department of Transport,  which runs across to Galveston Island and back on a regular basis.  It is a large ferry which can handle numerous cars, transport trucks and motorhomes.

I will add photos for this trip in a separate entry because I have numerous photos of the area.

We are enjoying warmer weather and all the new sites to see.

Hope you have time to check back in for the rest of our adventures.  If you have any comments you can send them to us here
