There are tree sites and open air sites. The park is a beautiful place to stay for a couple of weeks. One of the work campers told me that they get temperatures in the teens F, for only a couple of weeks a year, in January even though they are up on Sand Mountain.. There are lots of things to do. It is a beautiful park in the middle of nature. We just wish it was easier to get to. See the notes at the bottom for an easy route we found to get to the park with our coach.
We enjoyed our stay at this park. The sites are large and level. There is an area for you to park if you like having some trees around and there is also, as you can see above, large open sites. The majority of sites are pull-thrus. You get to choice your own site, which is nice. There is a large clubhouse and an area above where they have music jams. There is a huge indoor heated pool and whirlpool. We really liked this park. We don't know if we will go back to it, even though it is a free two week stay for us. The reason that we probably won't go back is because of the location. It is not close enough to our route to make it a regular park for us. We would not go through the State Park with the coach again. See the directions and our route below. The directions that is supplied in the directory, is not big rig friendly. We did find a route which is much better to use, if you have a big rig and want to go to this park. The fall colors were beautiful and I imagine spring would be just as nice, for different reasons. See www.northalabama.org. DirectionsFrom Guntersville: Take Hwy 227 South (you are actually traveling north) approximately 13 miles to the four-lane highway (where 227 turns right). Cross four-lane highway & go 1/2 mile to Five-Points Store. Turn left and go 1.2 miles to resort entrance on left. (Go past Little Mountain Marina) From Huntsville: Take Hwy 431 South to Guntersville, go left on 227 South, follow directions above. From Birmingham: Take I-59 north to Hwy 431 at Gadsden/Attalla, then continue on 431 through Boaz and Albertville to Guntersville and follow above directions (Right on 227S from 431N). From Chattanooga: Take I-59 south to Exit 218 at Fort Payne. From Payne & Rainsville: Take Hwy 35 to Rainsville, turn left on Hwy 75. Travel approx. 15 miles to County Road 400, turn right. Go to first stop sign (13 miles), turn right. Go 1/3 mile to store, turn left and go 1.2 miles to resort entrance. From Scottsboro: Take Hwy 79 to Guntersville and follow above directions. From Cullman: Take Hwy 69 through Arab to Guntersville, go left on Hwy 431 North and follow above directions from Guntersville. ******Please note the above directions takes you through Guntersville State Park. It also takes you over very narrow roads, up the side of a mountain and down the other side. There is steep drop offs on the one side and cliffs on the other. Very little room for mistakes. The mailboxes all seem to lean out over the traveled part of the highway. There are steep up and down grades with sharp corners usually at the top or bottom or both. We found an easier way out. We went left on the four lanes, when we got back to where Hwy 227 joins the four lanes, going east. Further up SR-227 goes to the right and if you continue on it is CR-400. CR-400 (is a wide paved highway, in good shape) comes out onto SR-75. We went south on SR-75 until we reached Albertville, and then US-431 until we reached I-59. The park is nice. Everyone is very friendly and the park is well maintained. If we go back, we will take the SR-75 and CR-400 route. We will only go the route in the directions above, through the park, in the car. It is beautiful, but not big coach friendly. SR-75 and CR-400 is a much better route. Might be a couple of miles longer, but much easier on the coach and our nerves. Meeting a fast moving dump truck on a narrow mountain road is not our idea of having fun.
No. 11 above is where CR-400 intersects with SR-75 just north of the little town of Geraldine. CR-400 does not show on many maps, but it is there and is a much better road for big rigs then SR-227 S.
