November, 2007 Nov. 1 - The days have been really nice here. It is cool at night but the days become quite enjoyable early. We took a drive around the park. It is 540 acres here. I should have walked but Doug wanted to see the rest of the park also and there is no way he will walk that far. It might be good for him 8-)
It was a sparkling day with glories sunshine. Just a perfect fall day in Batesville, Indiana. We returned to the coach after our drive around the park. We just hung out and enjoyed the weather. We can feel winter creeping further south, as the days shorten and the wind develops an icy lining. We will be happy to move further south at the end of our stay here. Nov. 3 One thing we haven't seen yet is the tree growing out of the courthouse roof in Greensburg. We have seen it on TV and someone suggested that we should go and see it. We were surprised that it was so close. I have to learn to check the areas we are in, to know what we should be seeing. Today we decided to go and see this famous tree. It was about at 15 mile drive into Greensburg. We had looked for it on Oct. 31st but had missed it. The traffic was heavy and we didn't really know where in town we should be looking. By today we knew where it was at and were going to see it for ourselves. Pretty neat tree. I don't know if I would be letting it grow out of the roof, but the Town Fathers sure do have a way of attracting the curious. The Court House is an awesome building also. We took several photos of the Court House and its tree. It is like a feather in the crown of the building. Since we were in Greensburg, we decided to have a Ponderosa lunch. The salad bar and hot buffet is always enough for us. We enjoyed our lunch and we also enjoy our senior discount. The nights continue to get cooler. The leaves are blanketing the ground. The wind stirs the leaves creating a crazy dance of leaves swirling across the campground sites. Lots of people are going south. Phase IV of this campground has full hook-ups and is the only section open at the present time. Large motorhomes and fifth wheels pull in, set up for the night and are gone in the morning. It is an never ending turn-over of units. Soon it will be our turn to put the sewer hose away, unplug the electric and start down the road to warmer temps. We filled our water tank and put our water hose away a few days ago to avoid it being frozen in the cold morning hours. We know it is time to stretch our wings and follow the other snowbirds to the warmer climates.
The balance of the week passed quickly. We have decided to leave on Saturday instead of Sunday as booked. If we wait until Sunday, then we will be driving around Nashville Monday morning. We don't want to do that. I was able to change our reservation at Diamond Caverns in Kentucky, so Saturday is the day we leave. We are both ready to move on to warmer weather. This has been great but it is getting late in the season and we don't want to freeze anything including ourselves. Nov. 10th - We were up at our usual time. We didn't have to rush because we only had a couple of hundred miles to go, but we were both ready to leave so we hooked up and hit the road. We took US-46 west to SR-129 south. SR-129 is a great road with wide shoulders. We wish they were all like this. (sorry about the reflection off the dash in the photo) This also gives you a good view to what I see through our windshield. The views are great and ever changing. We never get bored of seeing the new views through our picture window (windshield). The miles ticked by and soon we were rolling west on US-50. This is also a good route around Indianapolis. We had driven down SR-3 from I-69 south to Indian Lakes and we will travel on into Kentucky on I-65 from US-50. We will probably take this same route when we are returning home in the spring. It is a beautiful drive with little traffic and no city traffic. We rolled into Diamond Caverns (a Coast to Coast Deluxe park) off of Exit 48 and I-65 south around lunch time. We had made good time. We booked in, picked a site, sent the TV Satellite dish up, looked at our free satellite finder program and had the dish locked on in seconds. This program makes it so much easier to find our satellite. The best part is you don't have to be online to use it. You just open the program, enter the zip code for the area you are in and it gives you a list of all the satellites and there co-ordinates. If you do battle with your TV satellite dish every time you move, check out this program. It is great! The temps were so warm that we opened up our windows and door. We always enjoy having the fresh air. After the sun went down it cooled off. We realized we still had a few more miles to go to enjoy the warmer evenings. Morning rolled around with this site greeting us when we went out to get the car ready for another day of being towed. We take the power pack out of the car at the end of each day and re-charge it so that it will be ready to power our brake buddy when it needs the power. Works great and saves us having a dead battery on the car, at the end of the day.
This should be the last time this year for us to see frost on the windshield. The trees are sure beautiful in this cold morning air and it looks like it is going to be another beautiful day here. Tonight we will be in Alabama and hopefully no more cold. Our fingers are crossed. ![]() Nov.
11th - Canadian Remembrance Day and American Veterans Day. This is always
an extra important day of the year. This is the day we have set aside to
show our Military that we do appreciate the sacrifices of Life, Health and
Family Time they have given so that we can all enjoy our
freedom. American and Canadian!
We thank YOU every day of the year and today we can celebrate our freedoms because of your unselfish sacrifice. My Great Uncle gave his life in the First World War. We have had many more family members who have served in peace and in war. Where would be be without the sacrifices of our Military. We were on the road around 7:30 a.m. We had Nashville to drive through. We had drove through Nashville last spring and Doug wanted to try the route around this time. Traffic was light. We saw the Grand Old Opry as we drove through. Maybe we will stop sometime and go back to the Opry again. Today we had other places to go and see. The miles ticked away. The traffic was light. Soon we were through Tennessee and in northern Alabama. We left I-65 for the night on exit 354 going west on US-31. We were at Northgate by the time we reached the end of the exit ramp. It is definitely easy on and off here. We checked in, picked our site, and were hooked up within minutes. We ate a quick lunch, unhooked the car and took off. We were on a mission. We were going to check out the Natchez Trace Naco/Thousand Trails park. We had heard that there was a low bridge going into the park, off the Trace and we wanted to see for ourselves. It is also one of our ROD+ parks and we can stay there free for two weeks, twice a year. After a few wrong turns we found the Natchez Trace and also the park. It was closed at the end of Oct. for the season and won't open until around the first of April. We couldn't drive in because of the gate being locked. It looks like a nice park, but with it closing this early and not opening until April 1st, we won't be booking into it. After looking at the bridge we wouldn't be booking in here either. The bridge is well scarred from air conditioners hitting it. The bridge only has 11 feet clearance. If you need more you have to leave the pavement and drive on the left shoulder. We would not do that with our coach. It is hard to determine how soft the ground is or how stable. We wouldn't want to take the chance in the spring, of getting stuck or laying the coach over, just to get to this campground. We turned around and went back towards where we were parked for the night. We did enjoy our short trip on the Natchez Trace. It reminds me of the old 35 highway in the area of Ontario where I grew up. It was a beautiful drive through a green tunnel of trees. I was driving so there are no photos. We made a few more wrong turns on the way back. I had written the directions down so that I could read them, but I still missed a couple of turns. Doug doesn't read maps, so it is up to me to keep us going in the right direction. We stopped for burgers on the way back to the coach. After driving all afternoon, I did not feel like making dinner. We returned to the coach and relaxed with a bit of TV before calling it a night. We are in Central time so we are going to bed an hour earlier then usual because our body is still adjusting to the time chance on the weekend, now another hour to adjust too. Nov.12 - We were up again at our usual time. Doug doesn't need an alarm. He is still on Day Light saving time. We are now getting up at 5 instead of 6 for this time zone. I hope he makes the adjustment or it will be a long winter. We were back on I-65 south before 7 a.m. When we reached Birmingham, we started west on I-20. It is a real nice highway and the miles rolled by quickly. Shortly after noon we arrived at our next stop. It is a Passport America park just off of I-20 in Marion. Benchmark RV & Park is our home for the next three nights. The weather is fantastic. It is in the 60's but with the humidity feels much warmer. We won't need the furnace tonight! Nov. 13 - We didn't need the furnace. This is another beautiful day. Our windows and door is open to the warm southern air. I had to do some grocery shopping. Doug didn't feel like going, so I hopped in the car and went looking for a grocery store. Our Microsoft Streets and Trips helps us find what we are looking for. I just click on the area we are in and then click the Find Nearby Places and we know where everything is at
We are at the number 14. We can check out these areas without being online. If we have internet connection, then we can check online, but we don't need it. I didn't go to the Wal-Mart though. Hard to believe aye! There was a WinDixie on the way, so I stopped there. Why go further then we have to. I came back to the coach with many more items then I had gone after, but there are always such good sales at WinDixie they are hard to pass up. The rest of the day was spent in the usual manner. I started updating this site and Doug watched TV. Nov. 14 - Another great night and morning. We haven't used the furnace since we arrived here. At 9 this morning it was in the 60's and the humidity was at 95%. It was another quiet day of just being and enjoying. The windows are open along with the door. This is the weather we have been looking for. Tomorrow is move day so Doug closed the awnings over the windows, emptied the tanks and hooked up the car. We are ready to roll tomorrow morning after Doug disconnects the electricity and I put the brake buddy in the car and put everything in towing mode. We will be off to southern Louisiana for two weeks then Texas for the balance of the winter.
