Styx River Resort, Robertsdale, Alabama

We were at Styx River Resort,  25301 Water World Road. Robertsdale, AL 36567 (251) 960-1167 several times. It is just off of Wilcox Rd. Exit 53 on I-10, in the Robertsdale, AL area.

A very cool morning.  Look at all the frost on the car.  It was shivering and saying why aren't we in Florida.  We wondered that ourselves.

100_2490 (Small).jpg (83827 bytes)The park was close to being empty on the side that they put members in, when Styx River is not their homepark.  We were in this park with our Resorts of Distinction Plus Membership which gives us 250 home parks.  However, the home park members side is nice and level, but the side that they put members in, when this is not their "Home Park" is a different story.  Best described by saying this is one of our home parks, but not our originating home park which is in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

According to the Resorts of Distinction rules this is one of our home parks and we do not have to pay to stay here for two periods of two weeks a year.  However, this is not our Home Park (the place where we originally bought our membership, so even though it is marketed as one of our home parks, we do not have the same benefits of people who bought their membership at this park.  This park and Spirit of the Suwannee are the only two parks that I know that separate the members this way.

Our lots were a pull-thru and narrow.  We didn't have a problem with that.  What we didn't like was the 3 foot bank that we had to very carefully walk down to get into our coach.  There was a level spot about 2 feet wide.  Just enough room to put our little door mat.  To get to or to leave the coach, you had this little hill to climb or descend.  It was covered in pine needles, pine cones, pebbles, twigs etc.  If someone was not very steady on their feet, they could fall very easily, causing themselves some serious damage.  The problem is the sites have been cut into a hill, like a terrace.  The streets run up and down the  hill and the sites are terraced in-between the streets.  Whoever cut the sites did not make them wide enough and level enough.  Doug says that he will not take our coach back into Styx River Resort because it is to hard on the coach.  To get out you go to the right, across the top, down the far side of the park and at the bottom you have a 90  degree corner to the left, causing all the weight of the coach to be on the right front because of the corner and downhill both being so steep.  We watched numerous class A's, B's, C's and fifth wheel trailers having the same problem navigating this corner.  There is also a "V" grove in the pavement, the same color as the pavement, for water drainage.  It is very hard on the large coaches to cross this "V"s and if you don't cross them very slow and at the right angle, severe damage could be done very quickly.  Both of these situations puts a heavy strain on axles, springs and joints of the units.  We would rather not take the chance again of breaking something.

The park buildings are all well maintained and they have two pools, one indoor one outdoor.

This photo doesn't look like the hill is steep, but it is.  The street we have to leave on is directly behind the car, towards the top of the photo.  You can just see a tan strip in the trees for the road.

This one shows the steepness better.  Even the picnic table is on an angle.

You can also see how the sites are terraced in this photo.  The white truck and 5th wheel is about 20 feet higher in elevation then we are, maybe more.

There is a nice country cafe.  It was only open Wed. - Sunday when we were there.

There are various activities to keep everyone busy.

We would like to go back to the park, but don't want to risk damaging our coach or maybe falling and hurting ourselves.  They need to update the sites on the east side of this park.

Update-March/07 - We did go back for two weeks.  After  requesting that the registration office give us a site on the other side, they did so with reluctance.  They gave a choice of three sites which were all very small.  Basically the width of the coach, without slides.  We took the best of the three and hope that we can cut across some sites on the way out, because the corners are really tight on this side.

This is one of the wide pull-thru sites.  You really have to watch for low tree limbs and trees real close to the edge of the streets and sites, when you are in this park.

We were here back in the spring of 2005.  The Styx River held us captive for 36 hours. You can read about the Styx River flooding here.
