When we decided to sell the Pace we had a big decision to make.  What truck were we going to buy to pull our Challenger 31 foot Fifth Wheel trailer.  We couldn't buy any old truck.  It had to be reliable and big enough to do the job.  Doug didn't want a diesel because he had worked at International Truck and Engine in Chatham, Ontario inhaling diesel fumes all day for 30 years.  He had inhaled more then his share of diesel fumes and he didn't want a diesel truck under any conditions. A 8 cylinder truck would do the job, but it would be underpowered for what we wanted it to do.  If we wanted to climb a mountain then we wanted the ponies under the hood to be big enough to do the job.

Our solution was to buy a 2001 Ford 250 SuperDuty with a V10 engine.  It was very low mileage.  It only had 48,000 kms or under 30,000 miles.  Just broken in.  The fellow that owned it before us took meticulous care of it.  This truck was the same as new and at a fraction of the price.  We happily traded our 2005 Chevy Cobalt in on it at St. Marys Ford in St. Marys, Ontario. It is an excellent place to deal and we will look to them for our next vehicle when it is time to sell this one.  This dealership still does business with a handshake sealing the deal.  We didn't think that a business like this still existed.  It was a pleasant and rewarding surprise.

Many consider the Ford V-10 to be a gas hog.  When we first bought it we would have to agree but there is a solution to this problem.  We replaced our air filter with a K&N Air Filter.  We have replaced every air filter in our vehicles for over 10 years now with the K&N Air Filter.  Our truck operates better and we went from 9.4 mpg to 14.9 mpg by using this simple fix.  We have also realized that we cannot rely on the trip computer.  The reading above is what it recorded.  By keeping track of the mileage and gas used and calculating the amount ourselves, we have been amazed to find that we are receiving over 19 mpg when not towing and between 10 and 13 mpg when towing.  We have no complaints with regards to this V-10 Ford motor with the K&N air filter installed.  It is an easy install.  You take out the old and replace it with the K&N.  It takes a few miles to start to notice the difference in the way your motor responds to the increased air flow from the new air filter, and also the difference in your gas mileage.  The filters are expensive, but it is the last one that you will have to buy for your vehicle because you can clean them with a K&N cleaning spray and then re-install it into your truck.  We highly recommend the K&N air filter.

We have more modifications on this truck and to read about them you can follow these links.
